A teenager was sentenced Thursday to 82 years to life in prison in the death of a 14-year-old girl who was struck by a stray bullet.
Edmundo Ruiz, 18, was found guilty in September of first-degree murder in the May 26, 2008, shooting death of Cynthia Perez, who was struck once above the left eye.
Perez was riding in a car with her family when she was fatally struck at a Highland Park intersection.
A judge rejected a bid for leniency by Ruiz's attorney, who argued it would be "cruel and unusual punishment" to sentence the defendant, who was 16 years old at the time of the crime, to such a lengthy prison term.
The jury also convicted Ruiz of attempted murder of the intended target, who was in another vehicle and was wounded in both arms, according to Deputy District Attorney Michele Hanisee.
