Environmentalists Sue EPA Over Air Pollution

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ― Environmentalists plan to sue the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency after it declared one type of air pollution is no longer a problem in the San Joaquin Valley.

Late Friday, the agency decided that the region was no longer plagued with excessive levels of tiny particle pollution. But environmental groups, including Earthjustice, say data show that federal pollution standards were surpassed nine times in recent years.

The EPA says the temporary spikes in pollution that showed up in its monitors over a three-year period were caused by high winds and construction, so they should be ignored.
