Slain SWAT Officer Honored At Ducks, Kings Game
ANAHEIM, Calif.
Slain Los Angeles police SWAT Officer Randal Simmons and his partner, James Veenstra, were honored Wednesday night by the Anaheim Ducks during their game at the Honda Center against the Los Angeles Kings.
There was a moment of silence for Simmons and video memorial shown before the start of the Ducks' 2-1 shootout win over the Kings. Veenstra dropped the ceremonial first puck.
Fans also chipped in. Several season ticket holder donated their seats and Golden State Foods donated its suite so Simmons and Veenstra's fellow officers could attend the sold-out game, according to a Ducks official.
Simmons, 51, was shot and killed Feb. 7 in a standoff with a young man who had killed his father and two brothers inside a Winnetka home. The man was killed by other officers. Veenstra was struck in the face by a bullet.
The Police Commission unanimously approved a proposal Tuesday to name the LAPD's new SWAT headquarters for Simmons.
