Divers Swim In Mysterious San Diego Current

SAN DIEGO (AP) ― Lifeguards and experts are puzzled by an unusual deep-water current that slammed into a group of scuba divers off the La Jolla shores in San Diego.

Four divers were about 60 feet below the surface Wednesday when a strong current surged toward them, pushing a wall of sand with it.

The strange and previously unknown current was felt in a normally placid body of water, popular with divers and other marine recreationists.

Experts at the nearby Scripps Institution of Oceanography say several other divers noticed it, but the current was not felt on the surface.

Some divers clung to a cliff face to avoid being pushed out to sea. Diver Terry Strait says his group slowly swam against the flow and broke free at a depth of 15 feet.
