Prosecutors have filed charges against a homeless man for allegedly stabbing a 14-year-old girl in Villa Park on Sunday, and the charges could make him eligible for a "three strikes" sentence of 28 years to life if he is convicted.
David Edward Eddy, 50, is charged with one felony count each of assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a deadly weapon, along with the sentencing enhancement of great bodily injury. Eddy pleaded not guilty to the charges, after several profanity-laced outbursts in court.
Eddy is charged with having two prior-strike convictions for a 1992 first-degree burglary in San Francisco County and a 1984 aggravated assault in Los Angeles County, prosecutors said.
Police and witnesses say two girls were across the street from a bagel shop in Villa Park on Sunday when a man covered with dirt and tattoos approached them from behind and stabbed one of them three times in the ribs with a steak knife.
The girls fled to a gas station where the victim collapsed. She was treated at a hospital and later released.
Bail for Eddy was set at $1 million and a pretrial hearing was scheduled for Monday. While in court Tuesday, Eddy yelled out that people were trying to steal his Social Security income and got into a dispute with court officials about his age.
