The Los Angeles City Council Wednesday amended the city's curfew ordinance to help keep minors in class during school hours.
Any student under the age of 18 will now be required to remain in school during the day and at home between 10 p.m. and sunrise the following morning.
The city's previous curfew law limited juveniles from being in public streets, highways, roads, parks and other public places between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and after 10 p.m.
"I think we've all heard time and time again that truancy and crime in neighborhoods is closely connected," City Councilwoman Jan Perry said.
LAPD Assistant Chief Earl Paysinger said the Los Angeles Unified School District has 40,000 unauthorized absences a day.
"In my judgment, this issue is not necessarily about enforcement. It's not about the Los Angeles Police Department, but provides for the welfare and safety of our youth during the periods when they should be in a school," Paysinger said.
Minors accompanied by their parents, guardian, spouse or school official would be exempt from the curfew.
At night, youths may be out if they are running an errand for a parent, attending a public meeting, involved in an emergency, or leaving a movie, sporting event or other entertainment activity.
