Search Suspended For Couple Missing From Cruise

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) ― The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended the search for an elderly couple believed to have fallen off a Carnival Cruise ship between Long Beach and northern Mexico.

Coast Guard spokesman Scott Epperson says the aerial search was suspended about 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

He said crews searched throughout the night for the 90-year-old man and his 79-year-old wife, who were last seen Tuesday aboard a Carnival Cruise ship.

But officials decided to end the search after determining their chance of surviving in the frigid water were slim. They also consulted with the couple's relatives, who agreed to suspending the search.

Meanwhile, the FBI continues to investigate their disappearance.

FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller says agents were trying to determine whether the couple died of a "homicide, a suicide ... or an accidental death."

Miami-based Carnival says the couple's cabin door was double-locked from the inside with a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the handle. Their belongings remained inside and the door leading from the cabin to the private balcony was unlocked.

The couple's names and hometowns have not been released.
