405 Freeway Pileup Sends 2 Cops To Hospital

Crash Injures 4 Other People, Snarls Traffic

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― A vehicle driven by two undercover Los Angeles police officers assigned to the Wilshire Station crashed into a stalled vehicle on the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway Saturday, but it was unclear if anyone was seriously hurt.

The accident occurred near Bel Air Crest Road at 2:16 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

"It first came in as a solo crash blocking the HOV and No. 1 lane," CHP Officer Anthony Martin said. "A few minutes later it was reported as a multi-vehicle collision."

A stalled silver-colored vehicle was blocking the carpool and No. 1 lane and was struck by another vehicle, according to the CHP.

The second vehicle was occupied by two undercover Los Angeles police officers from the Wilshire Station, RMG News reported.

A short time later another solo crash occurred in the same area, the CHP reported.

"When units responded, several lanes were blocked because of the numerous collisions," Martin said.

A Los Angeles Fire Department captain told a Newsreel camera crew that the two plainclothes officers were taken to Sherman Oaks Hospital and Health Center, while four other people in the pileup were also hospitalized.

"One of the officers is being released and we do not have any update on the other officer," Los Angeles police Sgt. Roger Cheatham of the Wilshire Station said.

Several lanes were blocked for more than an hour.
