Authorities Monday identified a 31-year-old Costa Mesa man who died while diving off the coast of Santa Catalina Island.
Tim Hatch, who was with his father and a few other people on the family's boat, failed to surface Saturday afternoon while swimming off the southwest-facing side of the island, the Orange County Register reported.
"When he didn't come back, we though he was playing around at first," his father, Bob Hatch, 56, told the newspaper. "Then I jumped in a minute later. I got into the water and tried to see, but I didn't have any goggles."
Lifeguards who helped recover the body said Hatch may have experienced "shallow water blackout," which is caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain.
Tim Hatch was president of Costa Mesa-based Linwood Engineering Associates, which is owned by his father, the Register reported.
