Police Nab Suspect In Cori Desmond Murder Case

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (CBS) ― An anonymous tip led Redondo Beach police to who they suspect is the man who killed bartender Cori Desmond.

Tony Lopez Perez, of Redondo Beach, was taken into custody this week and will be tried for the 28-year-old's murder.

"I'm glad he's off the streets," Desmond's brother, Blake, said Friday, "but it'll never be over for me."

The bartender was last seen at her job at the Backstreet Lounge on Artesia Boulevard last February. Police later found her jeep parked on Artesia Street.

Police said Perez abducted Desmond outside the bar and brutally murdered her. They suspect Perez randomly targeted Desmond and the motive was sexual assault.

The next day Desmond's body was found in a bag along Highway 330 in the Running Springs area.

Police said evidence in the jeep linked Perez to the crime.

Desmond's family had put up billboards trying to find her. A tipster gave detectives the needed break in the case.

"It's affected every inch of my life," the victim's father, Mark Desmond, said while sitting with his family.

"We'll never be the same."

The suspect lives two blocks from where Desmond was abducted. Perez reportedly has two children.

Perez is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 13 in San Bernardino.
