Police Find AK-47-Type Gun After Compton Shootout
COMPTON, Calif.
Deputies recovered a high-caliber weapon that was used in a shootout between sheriff's deputies and a gunman in Compton on Tuesday night. Eleven people have been detained for questioning, according to authorities.
No injuries were reported during the exchange of gunfire that took place at Alondra Boulevard and Grandee Avenue, near Compton Woodley Airport, around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday, said Sgt. Eric Castano of the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's Compton Station.
After the shooting, the gunman fled into an area where several apartment buildings stand, which prompted deputies to establish a large search perimeter and evacuate 150 residents for their safety, he said.
"Everyone was cooperative," Castano said, adding that sheriff's buses took residents to Compton High School and Longfellow Elementary in Compton, Castano said.
Friends and relatives picked up some residents from the, he said, adding that residents were able to return to their homes early this morning.
During the search, "11 people -- both males and females -- were found within the containment area, Castano said. "They are being detained and are believed to have been involved in the incident."
Investigators were questioning the individuals at the sheriff's Compton Station but no arrests have been made.
During the search, authorities found a high-caliber assault rifle, an AK-47-type weapon believed to have been used during the shootout.
Castano said the gunman fired several rounds at deputies patrolling an area "where there has been a lot of activity." The deputies returned fire and the gunman fled, he said.
