Search Ends For Teen Missing After Boat Crash

1 Killed, 1 Injured When Boat Runs Aground

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) ― The Coast Guard has ended the search for a 17-year-old boy who went missing after a boat ran aground in Santa Barbara County.

One person died and another was injured when the 40-foot "Scarlet Begonia" went aground Monday night near Purisima Point.

A spokesman at nearby Vandenberg Air Force Base says the boat may have hit rocks or a reef. Its back end was torn off.

Coast Guard spokesman Anthony Turner in Los Angeles says 31 square nautical miles of ocean were searched before the air and sea effort was called off Tuesday night. Searchers on foot, horseback and in all-terrain vehicles also combed the beach.

Turner says the boat was heading from Santa Barbara to San Francisco. He could not say who else was on the boat.

The cause of the grounding remains under investigation.
