Coach Charged In Sexual Assault Of Girl, 15

LOS ANGELES A high school coach and special education teacher's assistant at Birmingham High School in Van Nuys was charged Thursday with sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl.

Kevin Lamont Thomas, 40, was charged with five felony counts each of sexual penetration by a foreign object of an unconscious victim and sexual penetration by a foreign object on a child under 18. Thomas was also charged with one felony count each of committing a lewd act on a child and possession of matter depicting a minor engaging in sexual conduct, according to the District Attorney's Office.

The criminal complaint says the sexual assaults occurred between July 1, 2004 and Oct. 31, 2006.

Thomas worked as an assistant football coach at Birmingham and was running a private basketball workout program at the high school at the same time, police said. He recently took an additional job as the varsity defensive coordinator at Canyon High School Country.

Anyone with information about the alleged inappropriate contact involving Thomas can call the Van Nuys Station's Sexual Assault Unit at (818) 374-0040 or (818) 374-9500.

Thomas faces up to 30 years in state prison if convicted of the charges involving the girl.
