Final Arguments Underway In Carona Trial

SANTA ANA (AP) ― A federal prosecutor in the corruption trial of former Orange County sheriff Michael Carona told jurors Tuesday the evidence they were presented proves the ex-lawman is guilty of all charges.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Ken Julian said in his closing argument that Carona's scheming began as early as 1998 when he was first running for sheriff and was "desperate" to win.

The prosecutor reminded the jury of testimony from millionaire businessman Don Haidl, who told jurors he helped Carona launder at least $30,000 in campaign contributions in return for a post as assistant sheriff.

Carona, once celebrated as "America's sheriff" by CNN's Larry King, listened with his eyes closed.

Julian said evidence presented in the case shows, in his words, "beyond a reasonable doubt that Mike Carona is guilty of conspiracy, mail fraud and of witness tampering."
