Police are on the hunt for a hammer-wielding robber in Canoga Park.
Police say the suspect entered an Arco AM/PM Mini-Mart, 9110 Topanga Canyon Blvd. Sunday at 11:30 p.m.and asked the clerk for a key to the restroom. After returning the key and while paying for a purchase, the suspect pepper sprayed the clerk in the eyes, took a hammer he had hidden in his pants and began hitting the clerk with it.
The clerk was able to get away and the suspect jumped over the counter. The suspect threw the cash register to the ground and began hitting it with the hammer to get the cash drawer open. After opening the drawer, the suspect walked past the clerk and away from the store without taking any of the cash, police said.
The suspect is described as a black man, between 5 feet 9 and 5 feet 10 inches tall, 180 to 200 pounds and about 25 years old, wearing all black with a grey wool knit cap.
Anyone with information about the robbery can call Detectives Jae Thomas or Martin Bertsch at (818) 832-0609 or on weekends and nights, 1-877-LAWFULL.
