Wild Police Chase Ends With Rollover Crash

Cops Believed Suspect Had A Sawed-Off Shotgun

INDUSTRY, Calif. (CBS) ― A pickup truck involved in a wild, two-hour-plus chase over a half a dozen L.A. freeways ended Monday evening with a rollover crash.

The suspect appears to have been injured. He staggered out of the vehicle and attempted to climb over a guardrail down an embankment. He is now laying on the street in front of the truck.

The driver of a pickup truck who may be armed with a shotgun led law enforcement officials on a pursuit from Vernon toward downtown Los Angeles Monday.

The driver of a pickup truck who may be armed with a shotgun led law enforcement officials on a pursuit from Vernon toward downtown Los Angeles Monday. The pursuit began at 2:35 p.m. in Vernon, said California Highway Patrol Officer Anthony Martin. The chase -- sometimes fast, sometimes slow -- ended a few minutes before 5 p.m.

He said he did not know why sheriff's officials initially tried to pull the suspect over. But KCAL9 reported that the driver had a shotgun, and that he was seen reaching down toward the floor of the vehicle.

The driver took several freeways, including the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway and the Pomona (60) Freeway.

In Industry, the driver exited the eastbound 60 but quickly got back on heading westbound.

He slowed to a crawl on the 60 going through Montebello, sometimes going no more than 3 or 4 mph, and then speeding up. He came to a complete stop at least twice, but then drove off again. About an hour later, he was heading north on the Golden State (5) Freeway.
