2 Arrested After High-Speed Chase In Maywood

MAYWOOD, Calif. On Wednesday night, two men in a stolen SUV led authorities on a pursuit that began on a freeway in Lynwood and ended in Maywood, where they ran from the vehicle and attempted to flee but were arrested in a foot chase.

Deputies from the sheriff's Lakewood Station tracked down a stolen 2007 Jeep SUV that was armed with a LoJack security system around 10:20 p.m. Wednesday night on the northbound Long Beach (710) Freeway at Imperial Highway, according to Lt. Steve Sciacca of the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's Lakewood Station.

After the driver refused to yield, a pursuit ensued. As speeds grew to excessive levels, the ground pursuit was called off, but a sheriff's helicopter followed the vehicle, Sciacca said.

Approximately 10 minutes later, the SUV entered Maywood, where officers spotted the vehicle. Authorities then sent out several squad cars to pursue the Jeep, Maywood police Sgt. Angel Villegas said.

The suspects circled through city streets, turning the SUV's lights off in an attempt to lose police, according to broadcast reports.

The chase finally ended when the SUV hit a curb near the intersection of Pala Avenue and Randolph Street. The suspects then fled from the vehicle, Villegas said.

"Both the driver and passenger exited the vehicle and ran into a residential area," he said.

The suspects leapt over fences into the backyards of several homes and were closely followed by officers. Both men were then apprehended.

"Officers quickly located the suspects and they were taken into custody without incident."

The chase ended around 10:50 p.m., he said.

Both men, whose names have not been released, were expected to be charged with evading police and possession of a stolen vehicle, Villegas said.

The SUV was stolen from the East Los Angeles area on Wednesday, Sciacca added.
