Pedestrian Killed After Chase Ends In Crash

LOS ANGELES A suspect being chased by police crashed into a van in the Lincoln Heights area, then swerved into a crosswalk, killing a 63-year-old pedestrian.

Demetrio Sosa of Los Angeles was struck and killed near the intersection of Griffin Avenue and Broadway at about 2:20 p.m., Los Angeles Police department spokesman Richard French said.

The chase began when a patrol officer spotted the suspect and "the suspect gave a startled look, which is usually an indicator they're up to no good," LAPD Capt. Bill Murphy said.

A police helicopter continued the chase on the freeway, and patrol cars took up the chase again when the suspect exited at Mission.

A woman passenger jumped out of the car when the suspect exited the freeway, and she was taken into custody right away.

The suspect, driving at a high speed and recklessly, crashed into a silver van, spun out and hit the man walking in a crosswalk, Murphy said.

The suspect was arrested at the scene. He was identified as Robert Palacios, 41, of Los Angeles.

The car was not stolen, Murphy said.

D'Lisa Davies of the city fire department said a 36-year-old woman in the van that was struck was injured, although the extent of her injuries was unknown.

No officers were injured.
