CHP: Unsafe Lane Change Results In Deadly Crash

Ray Chidester, 90, Was Killed In 57 Freeway Accident

ORANGE, Calif. A 90-year-old passenger was killed in a crash on the Orange (57) Freeway, Orange County officials said Sunday.

The accident Saturday killed Ray Chidester of Villa Park at the scene. He was a passenger in a Toyota 4Runner.

The vehicle was traveling on the southbound 57 Freeway at 1 p.m. when the driver made an unsafe lane change in front of an SUV at speeds of 70 miles per hour, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Toyota hit the front of the other SUV as both cars tried to exit at Chapman. The car spun around, flipped over and slid down the embankment hitting a tree, CHP Officer P. Gomez said.

Both the driver and the passenger in the Toyota were trapped initially. The driver's name was not released.

Gomez said the motorist in the Toyota was taken to UCI Medical Center with major injuries. The driver of the other SUV was uninjured.
