Inmate Electrocuted, Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― The family of a jailed immigrant accidentally electrocuted at a Mojave Desert federal detention facility has filed a wrongful death lawsuit.

Cesar Gonzales-Baez was part of a Mira Loma detention facility work crew when he was shocked while using a jackhammer to dig holes last year.

The jackhammer hit an underground power line and the 35-year-old Pomona man, who was awaiting a deportation hearing at the Lancaster facility, was killed.

Sheriff's Department operators of the Mira Loma facility, "put a volunteer out there without having someone go out there and look for any underground utilities," family attorney Gregory Moreno said.

Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said he cannot comment on pending litigation.
