The gold-trading businesses co-owned by the woman slashed and stabbed to death in a Century City parking garage earlier this week
have been under investigation by the FBI for fraud, it was reported today.
Pamela Fayed, 44, of Camarillo, was fatally attacked in a parking garage
next to a high-rise office building at 1875 Century Park East about 6:35 p.m. Monday, and police were looking for an assailant believed to be driving a red sport utility vehicle.
She and estranged husband, Jim Fayed, ran e-Bullion and Goldfinger Coin & Bullion Sales, which supposedly has vaults in Los Angeles, Delaware, Switzerland and Australia.
According to divorce papers filed in October, the Fayeds had deposits of
about $12 million, and he tried to get a restraining order to keep her away
from the Goldfinger Coin office in Camarillo, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Attorney Mark Werksman, speaking for James Fayed, stated that he was
upset over his wife killing, "concerned about his safety and that of his ...
daughter."
Werksman declined to say why Fayed or his daughter might be in danger.
Federal prosecutors and security regulators told The Times that among
Goldfinger's customers was Abdul Tawala ibn Ali Alishtari, who was indicted in New York last year on charges of funneling money to terrorists via a Goldfinger account.
Goldfinger was not implicated in any wrongdoing in connection with
Alishtari, and it was unclear why federal agents were investigating the firms.
Los Angeles police Lt. Natalie Williams confirmed that the LAPD would be working with the FBI on the case.
Police have not named any suspects in the slaying.
The suspect, described only as a slender man in his 20s, was wearing a
black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans, police said.
The couple have a 12-year-old daughter, and Pamela Fayed has another
daughter, 18, from a previous marriage.
