The highest-ranking Los Angeles police official at the scene of a violent clash between officers and immigration protesters at MacArthur Park on May 1 is leaving the force.

Carter was commanding officer of Operations Central Bureau before being demoted to the rank of commander and assigned to his home.
Immigrant-rights protesters are planning a rally Thursday to condemn police behavior during the May 1 immigration march.
L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez are expected to join protesters for the event that begins with a meeting at a church, followed by a procession to MarArthur Park.
