Police Official Retires After May Day Clash

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― The highest-ranking Los Angeles police official at the scene of a violent clash between officers and immigration protesters at MacArthur Park on May 1 is leaving the force.

William Bratton says Cayler "Lee" Carter Junior has decided to retire rather than continue on home duty pending an investigation. The retirement takes effect on June 6.

Carter was commanding officer of Operations Central Bureau before being demoted to the rank of commander and assigned to his home.

Immigrant-rights protesters are planning a rally Thursday to condemn police behavior during the May 1 immigration march.

L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez are expected to join protesters for the event that begins with a meeting at a church, followed by a procession to MarArthur Park.
