Ex-O.C. Sheriff's Corruption Trial Delayed

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) ― The public corruption trial for Orange County's ex-sheriff has been delayed by two months.

A federal judge in Santa Ana decided Friday that attorneys for Michael Carona need more time to prepare for the trial and pushed the trial back to Oct. 28.

Carona had been scheduled for trial Aug. 26 for allegedly pocketing cash and gifts in exchange for political favors. He was indicted in January on charges of public corruption, witness tampering and fraud charges.

During a hearing last week, Carona's attorneys argued that the trial should be delayed because they had another 12,000 pages of statements and reports to review.

U.S. District Judge Andrew Guilford on Friday described the case as "unusual and complex" and ordered more preparation time.
