The search for a Long Beach man who fell overboard from a Carnival cruise ship off the coast of Florida on New Year's Eve has been called off, it was reported Sunday.
Antonio Matabang, 26, was described by coworkers on his MySpace page as an Artesia High School graduate who attended several South Bay colleges and resided in the Long Beach area.
Matabang was reportedly off duty 40 minutes after the midnight celebration when he tumbled more than 80-feet into the water without a life jacket. Six fellow workers witnessed the accident and informed authorities.
The 70-ton ship immediately stopped its trip and set forth searchers in life boats, but Matabang was not found. The crew also threw 3 life vests into the water.
A Carnival Cruiseline spokesman said Matabang was an entertainment worker on the Sensation.
