Councilman Under Fire For 'Breast Implant' Comment
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) ―
Santa Ana City Councilman Carlos Bustamante has resigned from two state commissions after he was quoted suggesting a candidate for Orange County sheriff could have gotten the job if he had breast implants, it was reported Friday.
Bustamante, a Republican, was appointed in January to the state Fair Employment and Housing Commission, but his nomination had yet to be confirmed, the Los Angeles Times reported. The governor's office Monday said in a letter that 43-year-old Bustamante's nomination was being withdrawn.
He'd also been appointed to the California Council on Criminal Justice.
"I kept telling the chief (Santa Ana Police Chief Paul Walters): 'Maybe we should get you some implants. Or a water bra,' " Bustamante reportedly joked in front of an L.A. Times reporter and an Internet blogger.
"When these remarks were brought to our attention, it seriously undermined any consideration he would've gotten," state Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Pacoima, a member of the Senate Rules Committee, told The Times.
