Car Crashes Into Woman Asleep At Home
BANNING, Calif. (CBS) ―
A couple were in custody today for allegedly leaving their two young children home alone and then being involved in a pre-dawn hit-and-run crash that injured a woman sleeping in her home, Banning police said.
Police said they tracked down Sarah Isabelle Baldwin, 33, and her partner, Clinton Erin Daigle, 36, to their home in the 4000 block of West Hoffer Street by following a fluid and debris trail on the roadway.
Officers were called to the 800 block of Omar Street about 2:15 a.m. Tuesday to investigate the hit-and-run crash, in which a driver slammed into a parked vehicle in the 600 block of West Wilson Street, then made a U-turn and struck a house while turning onto Omar, said Sgt. Greg Herrington.
"It went into the front of the house," he said.
The woman inside the home, who was asleep in a front bedroom with her head facing the outside wall, suffered head, back and neck injuries, Herrington said. She was taken to a hospital, but a condition report was unavailable.
Officers tracking the debris obtained a search warrant and, at the home of the suspects, found a red Mercury Sable showing damage consistent with the two crashes, police said.
Investigators questioning the couple determined they had allegedly left their children, ages 5 and 3, alone while they went out.
The children, who were checked out when awoke just after 7 a.m., seemed "peachy," Herrington said. "They determined there was no medical issue" with the youngsters, he said.
Daigle and Baldwin were booked into the Larry D. Smith Correction Facility on suspicion of hit-and-run with personal injury and willful cruelty to a child.
They were both in custody in lieu of $30,000 bail, pending arraignment Thursday, sheriff's jail records indicated.
