Three men were in custody Thursday morning after Los Angeles police officers shot and killed a car theft suspect following a chase and confrontation in the San Fernando Valley. The suspect was shot was swinging what is believed to be a tripod.
The three men were each arrested seperately, and all were in custody within about two hours of the shooting, which ocurred just before 7 p.m. Wednesday in Van Nuys.
What sparked the incident was when two LAPD motorcycle officers from the Violent Crime Task Force stopped a 1997 Saturn at Cedros Avenue and Valerio Street, said Officer Jason Lee of the LAPD's Media Relations Section.
During the routine stop, one of the passengers exited the car and began swinging an object -- believed to be a camera tripod -- as he approached the officers, prompting one of them to open fire, said Sgt. Zultan Mako of the Los Angeles Police Department's Van Nuys Station.
The man died about a block away at Valerio and Kester Avenue, Lee said. His identity was not immediately released. No officers were hurt.
During the shooting, the car sped off with the other three men inside, Mako said. It was found unoccupied roughly two blocks away from Cedros Avenue and Valerio Street, Lee added.
It was not immediately clear whether the Saturn had been stolen. Nor did authorities say what charges might be filed against the men arrested following the fatal traffic stop.
