Robbery Leads To Wild Police Pursuit
AZUSA, Calif. (CBS) ―
Two robbery suspects are now in custody after a Tuesday night pursuit that went from Azusa to Wilmington. Two other suspects are still at large.
A man and a woman -- whose names have not been released -- are expected to be booked on suspicion of the attempted murder of a peace officer, among other charges, at the Azusa jail.
"They're toast," Azusa police Lt. Pete Mena said.
A McDonald's restaurant on Azusa Ave. was held up by three men wearing masks and holding guns around 10:05 p.m. One of the suspects grabbed a woman's purse as the group fled, according to Mena.
A witness gave authorities a description of the vehicle, and an Azusa officer saw the car headed north on Cerritos Avenue, near Arrow Highway at 10:14, Azusa police Sgt. Bruce Badoni said.
A police chase involving three cars then ensued. During the pursuit the suspect reached speeds up to 90 mph.
One of the robbery suspects fired a shot at police on the Foothill (210) Freeway between Vernon and Irwindale Avenues. After getting off the single shot, the man dropped the gun onto the freeway, where it discharged a second time, Badoni said.
According to Sgt. Badoni, California Highway Patrol officers took over the pursuit as the chase moved onto the San Bernardino (10) Freeway.
CHP officers followed the suspects onto the southbound Harbor (110) Freeway and into San Pedro, where two suspects left the car and ran, CHP Officer Alex Gonzales said.
An officer using the pursuit intervention technique stopped the car at Pacific Coast Highway and Figueroa Street shortly after 11 p.m., Gonzales said.
A man and a woman were arrested, and at least one weapon was recovered from the car, police said.
