To avoid a head-on collision with a driver who was apparently smashed, a LAPD officer smashed his patrol car into a tree early Saturday morning.
The officer, whose name was withheld, was driving west on Victory Boulevard about 2 a.m. when a man in a older model brown Honda or Toyota ran a stop sign and turned in front of the patrol car, a sargeant told reporters.
The officer swerved and struck a tree and stop sign, to avoid the alleged DUI, at Victory and Valjean.
No officers were hurt, Lt. George Khoury of the Van Nuys Station said.
The driver of the brown car got away, Khoury said, adding that the officers believed the driver came from a nearby bar.
Anyone with more information on the accident was asked to call police at
(818) 374-9500.
