A Canadian man has been charged in Los Angeles federal court with smuggling $2 million worth of Ecstasy into the United States, authorities said.
Alexandru Sabau was arrested near his apartment in Newport Beach after he arrived for a roadside meeting to finalize a drug deal with an informant.
Investigators found 100,000 Ecstasy tablets, which Sabau intended to trade for 25 kilograms of cocaine, in the trunk of his rental car, according to an immigration official.
The pills typically sell for $20 each on the street.
Sabau's arrest capped a three-month undercover probe, which arose from several minor narcotics cases in Santa Monica and West Los Angeles, authorities said.
