A man has admitted using a meat cleaver to kill a 6-year-old Ventura County boy and wound his mother in 2007.
Sheriff's deputies say Calvin Sharp told them he received radio messages to slash his ex-girlfriend and her son outside their Newbury Park apartment.
Sharp initially pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but last week changed his plea to guilty on several charges, including the murder of Sev'n Molina and the attempted murder of Sandra Ruiz and a neighbor who tried to stop the attack. He also admitted killing his own dog.
Sharp's attorney, Todd Howeth, said Wednesday that the plea change allows Sharp to proceed directly to the sanity phase.
A judge will decide in January whether the 30-year-old should face life in prison or go to a mental hospital.
