Caltrans Settles Toxic Runoff Lawsuit

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― California's Department of Transportation has agreed to reduce toxic runoff from 1,000 miles of roadway. A judge in Los Angeles signed off Friday on a Caltrans settlement of a lawsuit that claimed it violated federal clean water laws by allowing tons of lead, pesticides, and grease to flow off roads during storms.

Environmental groups said the toxic pollution found its way into waterways and eventually the ocean.

Under the agreement, Caltrans will examine roads in Los Angeles and Ventura counties and within three years will find ways to reduce the storm runoff by 20 percent.

The deal settles a 14-year-old lawsuit by environmental groups.
