California's Population Up 11.5 Percent Since 2000

SACRAMENTO (AP) ― California's population is nearing 38 million people, up 11.5 percent since the 2000 census.

The state Department of Finance released its latest figures Wednesday and estimates that the nation's most populous state had about 37,771,000 people as of July 1. It added 438,000 residents in the previous year.

Los Angeles County is home to nearly 10.3 million people. The least populated is mountainous Alpine County, with just 1,261 residents.

Riverside County in inland Southern California was the fastest growing in both the number of new residents and percentage increase.

The state's population grew by 3.9 million since the 2000 census, but the annual growth rate has slowed since 2000.
