Police said a 19-year-old Cal State Northridge student managed to fight off a man who kidnapped her and tried to rape her.
The woman was sitting in her car using her cell phone around midnight at White Oak Avenue and Superior Street when a man got in the back seat of her car and wrapped her cell phone cord around her neck.
He then struck her several times and ordered her to drive, Los Angeles police Sgt. John Kielbasa said.
He forced the woman to drive to a cul-de-sac near Rinaldi Street and Balboa Boulevard in Granada Hills, about four miles away.
The man then forced the woman into the back seat and attempted to sexually assault her, but she was able to fight him off, Kielbasa said.
"She kicked him and hauled out of that car," Kielbasa said. "She ran to the first house she saw, screaming for help, and that resident called police."
The man, who was wearing a green sweater and khaki pants, ran away.
"She wasn't able to get a good look at him for a better description because every time she looked at him he struck her," Kielbasa said.
Authorities brought in bloodhounds that were able to pick up the suspect's scent, but after a search the dogs lost the scent about a half mile away from the scene, he said.
Police were testing her vehicle for DNA evidence.
