A mother carrying her 3-year-old daughter has been fatally struck by a school bus that swerved onto a sidewalk in front of a Walnut elementary school.
The little girl survived the Friday afternoon accident. Witnesses said they saw the mother toss her child to the ground before being hit in front of CJ Morris Elementary School.
California Highway Patrol spokesman Edmund Zorrilla said that the woman's actions were "the ultimate sacrifice of a mother." The woman's identity has not been released.
Several students were aboard the bus, but no other injuries were reported.
The bus was moving between 5 to 10 mph toward a school driveway when it jumped the curb. The accident is being investigated.
