William and Lisa May of Utah were understandably freaked out when they discovered their 3-year-old son was missing from their Buena Park hotel room Tuesday morning at 4 a.m.
Luke May somehow managed to crawl out of bed, open a locked door, a deadbolt lock, and climb down three steep flights of stairs, before he found refuge -- and more sleep -- under a parked van.
William and Lisa feared their son had been kidnapped when they reported him missing at 4:20 a.m., but after searching the area for about 90 minutes, a Buena Park police officer noticed the boy's foot protruding from underneath a van. Luke was fast asleep in diapers and a T-shirt, but awoke as soon as he was jostled, Sgt. William Kohanek said.
It was unclear how the 25-pound toddler got out, but three other children were staying in the suite, Kohanek noted.
"So many horrible things could have gone wrong," the sergeant said. "It's truly amazing."
"He just said he was cold and then he kept looking for our car, and he finally just crawled under that van," William May said. "And he said there were ants under the van and he was scared, but he just went to sleep."
Hotel surveillance video later showed the little boy lazily walking around the parking lot around 3 a.m.
Police from Fullerton, Cypress and La Palma aided in the search.
Hotel staff treated the family to a visit to Disneyland.
