Two elderly women charged with murdering two transient men and collecting millions from their life insurance policies pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Los Angeles.
Helen Golay, 75, and Olga Rutterschmidt, 73, the "
Black Widows", are being held without bail as long as prosecutors consider a death sentence for them.
Superior Court Commissioner James Bianco denied Golay's request to be allowed to have mascara and tweezers to pluck her eyebrows, to wear her own clothes and to be awakened no later than 7 a.m. on court days.
Each woman faces two counts of murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit murder for financial gain in the deaths of Paul Vados in November 1999 and Kenneth McDavid in June 2005.
The murder charges carry special allegations that could make the women eligible for the death penalty if convicted. Prosecutors have not decided whether to pursue the death penalty.
