COACHELLA
A Coachella woman was behind bars Monday in connection with the death of a 6-year-old boy who was hit by a car while he was riding his bike, authorities said.
Monica Christine Martinez, 30, was arrested for alleged gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence and booked into the Indio Jail, according to Lt. Andrew Shouse of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department's Indio Station. She was being held at $75,000 bail.
The boy, who was identified by the coroner's office as Edgar Curiel of Coachella, was hit by a 1988 Buick Skylark traveling northbound at Harrison Street, south of Avenue 53, Shouse said.
"The boy sustained major injuries and was transported to JFK Hospital where he was pronounced deceased," according to the lieutenant.
Anyone with information about the crash was asked to call authorities at (760) 863-8990.
