A big rig crashed in flames and touched off a brush blaze that shut down southbound Interstate 5 for an hour at dawn Thursday in the Camp Pendleton area.
Fuel tanks on the Vons grocery truck burst into flames when big rig overturned at about 5:09 a.m. and touched off a four-acre brush fire in a remote area of the Marine base.
Southbound lanes were immediately shut down. The brush blaze was put out within an hour.
California Highway Patrol Officer Rob Sanchez says the trucker had to be rescued from the demolished rig. He is hospitalized in undisclosed condition.
Sanchez says witnesses told officers the truck "flipped over a few times."
The CHP says the left lane and an area along the center divider in the southbound I-5 lanes reopened at 6:12 a.m.
