What's scarier to the people of Beverly Hills than the crime and terrorism they feared subway service might bring?
Gridlock.
Members of Beverly Hills' chamber of commerce and other civic leaders are coming out in favor of a
subway along congested Wilshire Boulevard to serve the city of movie stars and luxury shops.
Former Beverly Hills mayor and current city transit panel co-chair Allan Alexander says subway service would allow people leave their cars behind when they come to work and shop in the city.
That's a reversal from the opposition that's long stalled plans for the 15-mile "subway to the sea" linking downtown Los Angeles and coastal Santa Monica via Beverly Hills.
The transit panel is expected to finalize its tentative endorsement of a subway route next month and present it to the City Council in January.
