Battery Recycling Facility Released Too Much Lead

VERNON, Calif. (AP) ― Authorities say a battery recycling facility near downtown Los Angeles released dangerous amounts of toxic lead before being ordered to make deep cuts in production.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District says the Exide Technology facility in Vernon emitted lead at nearly twice the federal limit from December to April 2008.

Regulators from the district say they began investigating after complaints about ash fallout on cars in the area.

Officials at Exide Technology say their own monitors have not shown abnormally high lead levels, and are resisting the requirement that they cut production nearly in half and make other changes like adding monitors, plugging building holes and cleaning up the surrounding neighborhood.
