L.A. College Claims Barack Obama As Alumnus

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama may have degrees from Columbia and Harvard Law School, but a small liberal arts college in a quiet L.A. neighborhood claims him as an alumnus, too.

The Illinois senator spent two years at Occidental College in Eagle Rock before transferring to Columbia.

Occidental politics professor Roger Boesche said he remembers the young man then known as "Barry" Obama as "a very thoughtful student and a very curious student."

Obama told the L.A. Times in an e-mail he has "fond memories" of Occidental and that he's happy to have the school consider him an alumnus.

But he said his loyalties are divided with Columbia.
