Boy, 3, Falls 15 Feet From Balcony In Santa Ana

SANTA ANA A 3-year-old boy was in critical condition Wednesday after falling off a second-floor balcony in Santa Ana, police said.

The boy, who suffered head injuries in the roughly 15-foot fall, was in the care of his grandmother and an uncle who live in an apartment in the 600 block of West Third Street, Santa Ana police Cpl. Jose Gonzalez said.

The boy's father was at work in Los Angeles, according to Gonzalez, who added that he did not anticipate any charges against the relatives.

"At this point, it does appear to be an unfortunate accident," he said.

Gina Leon, who lives in the apartment below the balcony from which the boy fell, said she heard a loud thud and went to investigate.

"Right away, she went into action," Gonzalez said. "The neighbor began providing assistance to the injured boy by providing some rescue breaths, and he started to breathe on his own."

The grandmother was reportedly watching television and the uncle was taking a shower. Gonzalez said the boy's mother is incarcerated.
