Wildfire Burns 2,200 Acres Near Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.
A wildfire has burned more than 2,000 acres in the remote Piute area east of Bakersfield.
Kern County fire Capt. Alex Entenman says the blaze erupted in heavy timber Saturday afternoon some 30 miles east of Bakersfield and an estimated 2,200 acres had burned by late Sunday.
It was only 3 percent contained, or surrounded.
Evacuations have been ordered for about 50 residences in the French Meadow and Brown's Meadow areas. Entenman says most of the structures are summer homes.
Firefighters also warned residents that evacuations are recommended for the Claraville area east of Piute Mountain.
The cause of the blaze hasn't been determined.
More than 450 firefighters from the Kern County Fire Department, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and Cal Fire are battling the blaze.
