Autry Center To Get $100 Million Facelift

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― A Los Angeles museum dedicated to the Old West is getting a makeover.

The National Autry Center in Griffith Park is spending $100 million dollars for a new look.

The center, originally called the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum, merged with Los Angeles' Southwest Museum of the American Indian four years ago and needed more room for its expanded collection.

The new building will be a third larger to house collections of saddles, guns and other artifacts, including space to preserve and display some of the 250,000 American Indian baskets, pots and war bonnets from the Southwest Museum.

The century-old Southwest Museum in the Mount Washington area also is being renovated and is scheduled to reopen in 2011.
