A man has been hospitalized with minor injuries after an unknown arsonist set an abandoned vehicle on fire near railroad tracks in Huntington Park. The flames then jumped to a yard and a business where the victim was working, authorities said.
The fire was reported just after 9 p.m. at East 57th Street near Santa Fe Avenue. Approximately 75 firefighters put down the blaze in roughly 40 minutes, Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Frank Garrido said.
When firefighters arrived at the location, they found flames inside a business in the back portion of a commercial structure along with fully involved fire in a yard and an abandoned vehicle in the rear, Garrido said.
A man who was working inside the business -- a powder coating and paint manufacturer -- sustained minor burns and minor smoke inhalation, he said.
He was transported to a hospital, and was expected to survive, Garrido said.
Garrido said it appears that someone deliberatly set the abandoned vehicle on fire, which then spread to the yard and structure.
Authorities are currently determining to whom the vehicle was registered, Garrido said.
The fire also caused some damage to the business located in the front of the building -- The Pacific Torque Converter Co. -- but most of the damage was sustained in the rear business, Garrido said.
