LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's wife, Corina, has filed for divorce.

In papers filed Tuesday in LA Superior Court, Corina Villaraigosa cites irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. She seeks joint legal custody of the couple's 14-year-old daughter Natalia. The couple also have an 18-year-old son, Antonio, Junior.

The mayor announced last week that he and his wife were separating after 20 years of marriage. The announcement came about four months after he alluded to "ups and downs" in his relationship with his wife, amid reports that he was spotted without his wedding ring.

The mayor's spokesman Sean Clegg says Corina Villaraigosa believes that now is the right moment to file for divorce and the mayor supports her in that decision. Clegg says the mayor believes it's time to start focusing on the future and their shared responsibility as parents.
