LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― The Answer: Alex Trebek, 66, began his work with the long-running television quiz show "Jeopardy!" in 1984, earning two Daytime Emmy Awards for his role as host. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

On Friday, the Los Angeles City Council honored Alex Trebek for his tenure as the longtime host of "Jeopardy!" and for his charitable contributions.

"He's probably asked more questions on T.V. than all of the reporters combined," said Councilman Bernard Parks, who introduced a resolution honoring Trebek.

The game show host is also a spokesman for World Vision, a poverty relief organization, and the United Service Organization, which provides recreational services for the military.

Trebek told the council he thought "Jeopardy!" would last only two to three seasons, and that the game show was never meant to promote education.

He said he only accepted the job to make a buck, but was pleased with how the show has become a mainstay of American culture.

"Our contestants earn money the old-fashioned way," Trebek said. "They earn it. They demonstrate how valuable it is to have a good education."

Trebek, a native of Ontario, Canada, became a U.S. citizen in 1998. He lives in Studio City with his wife and two children.
