A man wearing a bandana on the lower part of his face pointed a gun at employees of an Acapulco restaurant in Los Feliz on Tuesday morning, prompting police to lock down the building and conduct a two-hour search before determining the suspect had escaped.
Police were sent to the restaurant at 4444 Sunset Blvd. around 8 a.m. after hearing reports of at least one robber in the building, according to Richard French of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Officers went into the building with guns drawn and started removing employees.
LAPD Capt. Bill Murphy told a local radio station that six employees were in the restaurant at the time. All six ran when the suspect pointed a gun at them. Three of them hid downstairs, while three others locked themselves in an upstairs women's bathroom.
"We got there, we locked the whole Acapulco restaurant down and all the streets leading up to it," Murphy told the station. "Our main goal was to safely extract all of the victims that were in there, the employees, and we went in there and we were able to do that. We took the three out in the bottom and then we went up and ... took the three from the top that were locked in the bathroom.
"We took them out, and then we did a detailed search of the entire building," he said. "Unfortunately, the suspect was not there when we did the search."
The search was called off around 10 a.m. There were no reports of any injuries. The suspect apparently left empty-handed.
"All our concern was our employees," Raymon Garcia, an official with the Acapulco restaurant chain, told reporters at the scene. "Thank God they're all OK. We have them here with us right now ... They're a little bit traumatized, but they're fine, thank God."
A description of the suspect has not been made available. Police are continuing to search the area.
