A project to widen the often-congested 91 Freeway, which is a major conduit for commuters traveling between Orange and Riverside counties, is getting underway.
An eastbound lane will be added along the six miles between the 241 Toll Road and the 71 Freeway.
The job is expected to cost $59.5 million and is scheduled to be completed in 2010. Nearly $48 million comes from the federal legislation meant to stimulate the economy, Joel Zlotnik of the Orange County Transportation Authority said.
"The Riverside Freeway is one of the most congested freeways in Southern California," Zlotnik said. "There are more than 300,000 daily trips on the 91 and that's expected to grow to 425,000 trips a day by 2030. It's a major corridor connecting Riverside and Orange Counties."
The Riverside County Transportation Commission will cover about $5 million in costs, and the Orange County Transportation Authority will supply about $6.6 million in funding. The OCTA's share will come from toll fees.
When lane closings are necessary, the work will be done overnight and on weekends, he said.
